Much as we’re enjoying all the Inhuman action Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can bring, there’s a palpable question if Coulson and co. will be back for Season 5. An actual Inhumans series complicates that prospect, but it seems an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. renewal is imminent, according to reports.

Entertainment Weekly provided a comprehensive guide to the major network series facing renewal or cancellation, among them Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ABC brass were previously keen on a fifth season, assuring that The Inhumans wouldn’t necessarily take its place, though it’s possible we’re looking at a shortened order:

With Inhumans coming to television this fall and S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s rating falling hard, it’s easy to suspect Agent Coulson’s division will be shuttered. We’re hearing the team will probably get one more assignment (despite that whole Ghost Rider thing).

Speculation on our part, but one final “pod” would probably make sense, and it might stand to reason that S.H.I.E.L.D. moves down to a more midseason-friendly 13 episodes. That would provide ample time to wrap up the series, and leave plenty of runway for The Inhumans to come down off its IMAX debut in the fall, even at only eight episodes.

In the meantime, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 will continue exploring its “What If” pod, airing “No Regrets” this Tuesday. Keep watching for news of Season 5!
