‘Allegiant’ Trailer: The End of ‘Divergent’ Begins

There are only three Divergent books. But there’s going to be four movies. Because when you take a popular series of young-adult novels and turn them into a series of movies, you always split the last one. That’s just the rule. If you don’t, they kick you out of Hollywood.

Veronica Roth’s original novels concluded with Allegiant. The Divergent Series: Allegiant is really just the first half of the final story; instead of going the Mockingjay – Part 1 and Mockingjay – Part 2 route, they gave the last film a whole new name, which is The Divergent Series: Ascendant. It’s a smart move, because it removes the clue that you’re charging people full price for half of a story.

The latest Divergent installment is directed by Robert Schwentke, and picks up the action with Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) on the run; the synopsis from IMDb says they “venture into the world outside of the fence and are taken into protective custody by a mysterious agency known as the Bureau of Genetic Welfare.” You’ve also got Miles Teller, Naomi Watts, and Jeff Daniels in a new and important role among that agency that takes our heroes in.

Allegiant opens in theaters on March 18, 2016. The final installment, Ascendant, premieres on March 24, 2017. As a bonus, here’s the U.K. trailer for Allegiant. Two trailers for the price of one! It’s the opposite of the actual Divergent release strategy!
