Just when you thought our long national eye-roll was over, and American Horror Story had finally unveiled its meta-Roanoke premise, Ryan Murphy will throw another curveball. The enigmatic showrunner teases that Season 6 will have a major shakeup midway through, and then again by Roanoke’s end.

Take this as your spoiler warning point, but American Horror Story fans certainly thought they had the new “My Roanoke Nighmare” season figured out; that of a horror documentary recreation format of a haunted Roanoke mansion. Not so, according to Ryan Murphy and co creator Brad Falchuk, who tell Entertainment Weekly we’ve got it all wrong:

Murphy: You’ll see starting in episode 6, the show has a huge turn and the thing that you think you’re watching is not what you’re watching.

Falchuk: Even though the subject matter has gotten out, it’s irrelevant because nobody gets what we’re doing. No matter what you think it is, it’s not that. Then, episode 6 comes and you’re like, ‘Wait! What happened?’

In particular, Murphy spoke of the 10-episode season in two halves, while Falchuk likened Roanoke to three different stories. “It’s like [episodes] 1-5, 6-9, and 10 is its own thing.”

Well, only a few put together the first theme before Season 6 premiered, so get on the second half, internet super-sleuths! In the meantime, new episodes of American Horror Story: Roanoke will premiere Wednesdays at 10:00 P.M. on FX.
