David Robert Mitchell has made two feature films: the somewhat-overlooked teen drama Myth of the American Sleepover, and last year’s indie horror hit It Follows. The director (rightfully) earned quite a bit of acclaim for his atmospheric sophomore effort, and it looks like we won’t have to wait too long to see what Mitchell does next, as he’s recruited Andrew Garfield to headline his latest project.

Although Mitchell’s two previous films are of different genres, they’re united by similar qualities; more specifically, he showcases how atmosphere can work in different tonal settings — which makes his next genre project all the more intriguing. Per Variety, Mitchell is preparing to head into production on Under the Silver Lake, a contemporary noir crime thriller set in Los Angeles.

Andrew Garfield will star in the project, with Michael De Luca (The Social Network) producing under his Michael De Luca Productions banner. Plot details are currently unavailable for the film, which will begin shooting in August. Mitchell’s first two films offered intimate character-driven narratives that were simple but effective, and atmospheric without feeling overly stylish. If his previous work is any indication, then perhaps we can expect something along similar lines with Under the Silver Lake.

Garfield recently starred in 99 Homes, and appears next opposite Liam Neeson in Martin Scorsese’s Silence. He also stars in war drama Hacksaw Ridge, the latest project directed by Mel Gibson.
