Over the years, Angry Birds has gone from being a must-have game to a cultural institution, even generating its own upcoming feature film. In continuing this legacy, game developer Rovio announced the next installment will tackle another big franchise  -- Angry Birds Transformers.

It's "Birds Disguised as Robots in Disguise"!

Angry Birds Transformers marks the second time Rovio has teamed up with another massively popular franchise. The first was a collaboration with Lucasfilm to create Angry Birds Star Wars, which took the mechanics of Angry Birds Space and transported them to "a galaxy far, far away." The end result was much better than anyone expected. Rather than be a simple cash-in, it ended up honoring the source material and delivering solid, amusing gameplay.

"Angry Birds Transformers provides fans worldwide with a fun, new story and characters and innovative ways, like our Telepods platform, for consumers to engage with the brand," said John Frascotti, Chief Marketing Officer at Hasbro. "We've collaborated with Rovio to create opportunities for kids and families to experience Autobirds and Deceptihogs across multiple formats and entertainment platforms for a completely immersive branded experience."

It's hard to be too cynical about Angry Birds Transformers. Sure, it's more Angry Birds, and sure, it's really an attempt to wring some cash out of Angry Birds and 'Transformers' fans, but Rovio has yet to truly phone it in on one of their games. Best of all, this next iteration is clearly based on the '80s animated series and not the new Michael Bay-directed movies, and the artwork is actually really cool and comprehensible.

No official release date has been announced, though Angry Birds Transformers will be released on multiple platforms.
