This has been a good weekend for Planet of the Apes fans. Not only did we get our first look at some of the early buzz for the final film in the trilogy  —  buzz that suggests War for the Planet of the Apes might just be the best and bleakest movie in the series yet  —  we’ve also been treated to a special Father’s Day trailer that explores the universal truths of fathers, sons, and legacy. Sentient apes or human, we’re all just trying to leave behind a better world for our children.

This new trailer (via ComingSoon) does hint at the finality of the film, with Andy Serkis’ Caesar making it clear that he’s going to war with Woody Harrelson and might not make it back. Much like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the film also demonstrates the sadness that lurks behind our dystopian future, with the main characters caught in a swirl of fear, grief, and the overwhelming desire to just be left alone to look after their own. Whatever the outcome, War for the Planet of the Apes looks to be a bittersweet conclusion to one of the most unexpectedly beautiful blockbuster franchises of the decade.
