We’re just one hour away from the close of Arrow Season 4, though this past week’s “Lost in the Flood” certainly dropped a notable clue on our Season 5 big bad. Now, Stephen Amell himself teases some surprising details of our mystery man (or men, or woman!), as well some hope that Season 5 will fix some of the complaints in recent years.

Speaking with Variety from the 2016 CW Upfronts, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 star expressed his hopes that the fifth season would return to the series’ roots, particularly now that The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow have gotten on their feet, negating the need to saddle Arrow with unnecessary setup.

‘Supergirl’ is coming, but we don’t have to introduce a new show next year. In Season 2, it was the introduction of ‘The Flash’ and crossovers there, and last year there was a lot with ‘Legends of Tomorrow,’ and we don’t have to do that this year because ‘Supergirl’ is already established. So I would like to focus on a lot of the stuff that I think ‘Arrow’ does very well.

The crossovers will certainly be coming, but what of Arrow’s own Season 5 story? We’ve heard a few charming descriptions of the new big bad, as well looked into that “Kovar” reference from the most recent hour, but don’t expect another superpower to threaten the team:

I’ve heard that our big bad, our villain, is something that you can really only do once you’re in the fifth, sixth or seventh season of a TV show … As far as I know, they don’t have superpowers. I’ll tell you that.

Granted, “they” is more likely to obscure the character’s gender than imply a plurality of villains, but will next week’s Season 4 finale offer any clue? Will Season 5 get Arrow back on track, as Amell says?
