On the heels of the news that Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers’ decimated the all-time highest weekend box-office record on Sunday, fans already started looking ahead to what Marvel Studios might have in store for a sequel. And while most follow-ups tend to go bigger, this bit of news suggests ‘The Avengers 2’ might go smaller. Much, much smaller.

Edgar Wright, esteemed director of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,’ posted a TwitPic  that teases the possible birth of B-level Avenger Ant-Man with the message, "Received this in the mail. What can it mean?"

For those who don’t know, Wright’s name has been attached to an ‘Ant-Man’ movie for a while now, and the project has stalled at different stages of development for various reasons. But with ‘The Avengers’ breaking the bank, Marvel will be looking to beef up a sequel, and adding new team members only makes sense.

Ant-Man was the costumed alter ego of Hank Pym, a scientist who came up with a formula that allowed him to change his size at whim. Later in the character’s career, he revealed his secret to his girlfriend, Janet Van Dyne, who in term became his partner, fighting as The Wasp.

But with one revelation comes countless questions. Will Marvel go ahead with an ‘Ant-Man’ origin story? Would Wright direct? Or could Ant-Man and Wasp just be added to the mix as part of ‘Thor 2,’ ‘Iron Man 3’ or ‘Captain America 2,’ the way Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) entered the fray without their own origin movies?

Either way, it’s a calculated Tweet by Wright, teasing Ant-Man without revealing what it means. But it means something … otherwise why bother sending it? Expect to hear a ton of ‘Avengers’ news in the coming months as Marvel continues to build on its massive property.
