Characters like Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman and the Mummy have long been utilized to strike fear into the hearts of us mere mortals, their names and visages being trotted out time and time again to terrorize generations of horror aficionados. But what if they all teamed up together not in the name of slaying us, but to save our butts?

That's apparently the gist of a new horror-action epic called 'Monster X,' which is now in development. Read on for more details!

'Monster X' comes from the mind of Ahmet Zappa's Monsterfoot Productions. Monsterfoot will collaborate with BenderSpink Productions ('The Incredible Burt Wonderstone') on the project, which will evidently do for horror luminaries what 'The Avengers' did for superheroes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will break down like this:

The idea is a sort of 'Avengers'-style take on the classic monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein’s creature, Mr. Hyde and others. (There are 10 in total; the “X” in the title is the Roman numeral.) The who’s who of monsters are assembled to defend humanity against an even greater threat to them all.

Sounds rather ambitious, and maybe even a little bold: these classic horror characters are retooled again and again (see: 'Hotel Transylvania,' 'Van Helsing' etc.), and their rabid fanbase gets riled up every time. Is doing an 'Avengers'-style action epic using these cherished names tantamount to blasphemy -- especially when you consider the fact that they're uniting in the name of good, not evil?

Interestingly enough, characters like Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster and the rest are in high demand right now. NBC is developing a 'Dracula' series, while there are no less than five 'Frankenstein'-inspired movies in the works at various studios. (The one on the fast-track just recently cast Daniel Radcliffe as Igor.)

Are you in the mood for an all-star horror team-up? Or should these folks leave Dracula and the rest dead and buried?
