It's been a good year for internet phenomenons to make the jump to TV, what with series versions of 'The Annoying Orange,' 'Bad Advice from My Brother,' 'Drunk History' and even a TV version of 'Between Two Ferns,' but up until now, the greatest story had never been told.  That story is 'Axe Cop.'

According to Variety, the wildly popular internet comic has been acquired by FOX's new Animation Domination HD, which intends to create six 15-minute installments of the series to air as a pilot of sorts for a new Saturday-night block of programming.  The absurdist series, which chronicles the adventures of an axe-wielding police officer and his array of sidekicks, was created in 2010 by then 5 year-old Malachai Nicolle, who supplies the stories and ideas for the comics as his adult brother Ethan Nicolle illustrates.

'Axe Cop' is one of four six-episode quarter-hour animated series Animation Domination HD head Nick Weidenfeld plans to introduce during the Saturday block's first year on the air, along with about 50 short-form shows of 1-3 minute each. The ultimate goal will be for the Animation Domination HD block to expand to half-hour series in the second year.  Says Wiedenfeld, who had his eye on the comic since his days at Adult Swim, "It's rare that you find something that feels both so new in its tone and content but also so fully formed. To me it was very clear that 'Axe Cop' has potential to be a larger franchise."

The first five issues of 'Axe Cop' were posted online on January 25, 2010 and managed to go viral in a matter of days.  Weidenfeld adds, “Axe Cop is one of the most creative, hilarious and naturally viral comic properties to emerge in the last decade. It has all the makings of an iconic animated series and it will help set the tone for Fox’s new late-prime Saturday animation lineup.”

Hmm, does 'Axe Cop' have the chops (come on, you knew that was coming) to make it as a full series?  How will that work with the comics being written by a five-year old?  Tell us your favorite 'Axe Cop' jokes and whether or not you'll watch in the comments!
