How serious is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? In the gritty contemporary traditions of Batman and Zack Snyder, this movie is taking itself very seriously. All Jesse Eisenbergs aside, Dawn of Justice is taking itself so seriously that Warner Bros. might be releasing it in 70mm so you can see all the brooding and grit and the dawning of justice the way it was meant to be seen.

THR reports that WB is considering releasing Batman v Superman in 70mm, which isn’t totally absurd since Snyder shot at least part of the film in 65mm — yeah, take that, J.J. Abrams. Unlike Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, theaters won’t need to be retrofitted with special projectors; Tarantino used rare lenses to film his western, while Snyder used a more conventional setup. So no, you won’t have to sit at your computer hitting refresh until your local theater puts the special 70mm screening tickets on sale, which means this is at least one upcoming, major studio film that doesn’t require a huge commitment…you know, aside from almost three hours of your time.

Typically, films that screen in 35, 60 or 70mm are artful events: The Hateful Eight (obviously), Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterful The Master, and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, to name a few of the more recent titles. For all of Interstellar’s (many, many) flaws, there was no denying how gorgeous that film looked when properly projected the way good ol’ Nolan intended.

Do we need to see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 70mm? Probably not. Snyder’s packed his upcoming superhero super-battle with so many (the “v” in the title stands for “very,” by the way) characters and set pieces — really, you’d just need a bigger screen so all that stuff fits on it.

Either way, Batman v Superman hits theaters on March 25, in 70mm or digital or both.
