Sometimes a movie comes along and gives you something you didn’t even know you wanted. Take The Belko Experiment. I’ve seen movies like Battle Royale and even the fun-in-theory, bad-in-execution Operation: Endgame, but it wasn’t until I first saw the first red band trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming film that I realized exactly what I’d been missing. Those movies delivered on fun fight sequences and gratuitous violence, but they lacked the return of a creeper, sleazy, Ghost-era Tony Goldwyn. Not any more.

The latest trailer for The Belko Experiment confirms what we already knew: the staff of Belko Industries has exactly two hours to kill 30 of the 80 employees in the building by any means possible. If the staff doesn’t kill 30 people, then the mysterious people in charge of the experiment will kill 60 of the survivors. It’s a simple numbers game, and part of the fun of a movie like this is seeing who almost immediately reverts to a homicidal maniac and who clings to their humanity for as long a time as possible. When your cast includes Michael Rooker and John C. McGinley, these aren’t difficult bets to make.

This type of film always seems to suffer a little on the back-end  —  once the majority of the killing is done and the film starts focusing on unraveling the mystery of who’s behind it all  —  but with Gunn’s black sense of humor and director Greg McLean’s knack for gratuitous violence, we should be along for quite the fun little ride. Fingers crossed that the movie doesn’t bait-and-switch me on the Tony Goldwyn character. If he dies right out of the gate, then James Gunn can expect a series of very cross tweets from me following my screening. I might even use some harsh language. I know!

Here’s the full plot synopsis for The Belko Experiment:

The Belko Experiment explores a twisted social experiment, in which a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogata and ordered by an unknown voice on an intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.

In addition to Goldwyn, Rooker, and McGinley, The Belko Experiment also stars John Gallagher Jr. and Adria Arjona and will cut its way into theaters on March 17, 2017.
