He was almost the bad guy in Star Trek Into Darkness, now he seems poised to definitely be the bad guy in Star Wars: Episode VIII.

(Maybe.)

That’s at least what Benicio Del Toro told Spanish radio station Rac1 (via Episode VII News). In an interview, Del Toro had this to say about his upcoming work schedule:

Star Wars is coming up, we will see how that turns out. I think we start shooting in March.

Asked who he was playing, Del Toro replied “They don’t let me talk too much about it, I’m like the villain.” Episode VII notes that the word “like” could suggest any number of things. Del Toro might not want to reveal too much about his character, or he might be playing a character with mixed or unclear allegiances (like, say a Boba Fett-style bounty hunter). Or maybe he has zero clue who he’s playing and just agreed to be in Star Wars because, y’know it’s Star Wars.

Last we heard, Del Toro was “confident” he’d appear in Episode VIII. Now he sounds downright certain. (Next, perhaps, he’ll be “absolutely positive.”) Then again, he was supposed to play Khan (or John Harrison, if you prefer or are J.J. Abrams) in Star Trek Into Darkness but that plan fell apart shortly before filming began. (He was ultimately replaced by Benedict Cumberbatch.) A lot could happen between now and the start of shooting — which Del Toro claims begins in March.

Star Wars: Episode VIII, written and directed by Rian Johnson, is currently scheduled to open in theaters on May 26, 2017.
