See the Cast of ‘Big Daddy’ Then and Now

Big Daddy
Columbia

Released in 1999, ‘Big Daddy’ starred Adam Sandler in his comedic prime as a lazy 30-something bachelor who is dumped by his girlfriend. After having the illegitimate son of his best friend dumped on his doorstep, he decides to prove to his ex that he can take responsibility by pretending that he’s adopted a kid. The heartwarming comedy was a major success at the box office, further solidifying the career of Sandler. Fifteen years later we look back at the cast of this modern classic and see what they’re up to now.

Then: Former ‘SNL’ star Adam Sandler played Sonny Koufax, an aimless 32-year-old bachelor. When his best friend Kevin’s illegitimate child shows up and Kevin ditches the kid to leave the country for work, Sonny adopts the kid as his own to get his ex back. Sandler previously entertained audiences with films like ‘Billy Madison’ and ‘Happy Gilmore.’

Now: Sandler has since appeared with Drew Barrymore in the rom-coms ‘The Wedding Singer’ and ’50 First Dates,’ and he’s starred in, produced and written wacky comedies like ‘Little Nicky,’ ‘You Don’t Mess with the Zohan,’ ‘Grown Ups’ and ‘Jack and Jill.’ Over the years he’s sometimes branched out into drama with roles in ‘Punch-Drunk Love’ and ‘Funny People,’ directed by his old friend Judd Apatow. Recently he starred in, wrote and produced ‘Grown Ups 2.’ He can be seen next reuniting with Drew Barrymore for the rom-com ‘Blended,’ and in the films ‘The Cobbler’ and ‘Men, Women and Children.’

Then: Dylan and Cole Sprouse shared the role of Julian McGrath, the illegitimate child of Sonny’s best friend Kevin — Sonny pretends to adopt Julian to impress his ex, but ends up bonding with the kid in the process. The Sprouse twins previously starred on the sitcom ‘Grace Under Fire’ and made their big-screen debut in ‘The Astronaut’s Wife.’

Now: Cole had a recurring role on ‘Friends’ as Ross’ son, Ben, and the pair shared roles in films like ‘The Master of Disguise’ and the indie ‘The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things.’ But audiences know them best from the hit Disney channel series ‘The Suite Life of Zack and Cody’ and the follow-up series ‘The Suite Life on Deck.’ Their time on the Disney channel ended in 2011, when the twins reportedly came up with an idea for a final season to help transition new stars onto the show, but were rejected by the network. These days, the twins attend NYU — Cole studies humanities and archaeology, while Dylan is studying video game design. In 2013, the twins were appointed ambassadors of the Koyamada Foundation, which seeks to help deepen relations between the youth of Japan and the youth of America.

Then: Joey Lauren Adams played Layla Maloney, an attorney and sister of Corinne, the girlfriend of Sonny’s best friend. Adams was previously known for roles in ‘Dazed and Confused,’ ‘Mallrats,’ and ‘Chasing Amy.’

Now: Adams has since appeared in the films ‘Harvard Man,’ ‘Dr. Dolittle 2,’ and ‘The Break-Up,’ and reunited with her ‘Mallrats’ and ‘Chasing Amy’ writer/director Kevin Smith for a brief appearance in ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ in 2001. She’s guest-starred on the shows ‘Veronica Mars’ and ‘Party Down,’ and had recurring roles on ‘United States of Tara’ and ‘Switched at Birth.’ More recently you may have seen her in the film ‘Blue Caprice.’

Jon Stewart, Kevin Gerrity

Then: Jon Stewart played Kevin Gerrity, Sonny’s best friend whose ex dumps his illegitimate son with him right as he plans to propose to his girlfriend and move to China. Stewart, previously known for hosting ‘The Jon Stewart Show’ on MTV, had just started hosting ‘The Daily Show’ on Comedy Central that same year.

Now: In addition to hosting ‘The Daily Show’ for 15 years and counting, Stewart has appeared in the films ‘Half Baked,’ ‘The Faculty,’ ‘Death to Smoochy,’ and lent his voice to the animated film ‘Doogal.’ He’s hosted the Grammy Awards twice and the Academy Awards (sadly, just once), and he recently completed filming on his directorial debut, ‘Rosewater,’ a film he also produced and wrote.

Leslie Mann, Corinne Maloney

Then: Leslie Mann played Corinne, Kevin’s girlfriend who disapproves of Sonny’s lifestyle and often argues with him. Mann had previously starred in ‘The Cable Guy,’ which was how she met writer Judd Apatow — the pair married in 1997.

Now: Mann has appeared in her husband’s films ‘The 40 Year-Old Virgin,’ ‘Knocked Up,’ ‘Funny People’ (with ‘Big Daddy’ co-star Adam Sandler), and ‘This Is 40.’ She’s also starred in the films ’17 Again,’ ‘I Love You, Phillip Morris’ (with ‘Cable Guy’ co-star Jim Carrey), and ‘The Change-Up.’ More recently you may have seen her in ‘The Bling Ring’ or heard her voice in ‘ParaNorman.’ Up next, she lends her voice to the animated films ‘Mr. Peabody and Sherman’ and ‘Rio 2,’ and co-stars with Cameron Diaz in the revenge comedy ‘The Other Woman.’

Rob Schneider, Nazo

Then: Rob Schneider played Nazo, a delivery man who is friendly with Sonny and often hangs out with him and Julian. Schneider had previously starred on ‘SNL’ with Sandler, and appeared with him in ‘The Waterboy.’

Now: That was only the beginning of Schneider’s appearances in Sandler’s films — he’s appeared in 13 films with Sandler, including ‘Mr. Deeds,’ ’50 First Dates,’ ‘Click,’ ‘You Don’t Mess with the Zohan,’ ‘Grown Ups,’ and ‘Jack and Jill.’ He’s also starred in the Sandler-produced flicks ‘Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo’ and its sequel, ‘The Benchwarmers,’ and ‘Grandma’s Boy.’ In 2012, Schneider starred in a CBS sitcom called ‘Rob,’ loosely based on his real-life, but the series was canceled early on. More recently he’s lent his voice to US version of the animated film ‘Top Cat: The Movie.’

Kristy Swanson, Vanessa

Columbia/Getty Images

Then: Kristy Swanson starred as Vanessa, Sonny’s girlfriend who dumps him because he’s irresponsible and aimless — she winds up dating a much, much older man. Swanson was best known for roles in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ (the movie), ‘The Chase,’ and ‘The Phantom.’

Now: Swanson has since appeared in the films ‘Dude, Where’s My Car,’ ‘What If…,’ and ‘Chick Magnet.’ Over the years she’s guest-starred on various television shows, including ‘Just Shoot Me,’ ‘CSI: Miami,’ ‘Law and Order: Criminal Intent,’ and she recently had a recurring role on the hit USA show ‘Psych.’ More recently she appeared in the TV movies ‘Operation Cupcake’ and ‘Mom and Dad Undergrads,’ and she can be seen next in the horror movie ‘Mimesis 2.’

Steve Buscemi, Homeless Guy

Columbia/Getty Images

Then: Steve Buscemi had a small role as a wacky homeless man — Buscemi had previously starred with Sandler in ‘Airheads,’ ‘Billy Madison,’ and ‘The Wedding Singer,’ and was also known for roles in films like ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘Fargo.’

Now: Buscemi has starred in the films ‘Ghost World,’ ‘Big Fish,’ ‘The Island,’ and ‘Youth in Revolt.’ And while these days he’s best known for playing gangster Nucky Thompson on the hit HBO series ‘Boardwalk Empire’ (now entering its final season), he’s always up for a role in one of his old buddy Adam Sandler’s movies. Buscemi has appeared with Sandler in ‘Mr. Deeds,’ ‘I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,’ and ‘Grown Ups.’ More recently he reprised his voice role for ‘Monsters University,’ appeared in Sandler’s ‘Grown Ups 2,’ and co-starred with Steve Carrell in ‘The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.’ Up next, he’ll reunite with Sandler again for ‘The Cobbler.’
