Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin is probably going to be a little longer than the animated version, so there’s plenty of space to add in a character or a subplot or two. Which seems to be why Billy Magnussen has just been added to the cast, as mystery newcomer “Prince Anders.”

The Hollywood Reporter notes that nothing else is known about the character, but I have at least one theory. Princess Jasmine’s hand in marriage is one of the major plots of the movie (both Aladdin and Jafar try to marry her for very different reasons) and it could be that this Prince Anders is perhaps a rival suitor for Princess Jasmine’s hand. Magnussen has played a prince before — his and Chris Pine’s royal one-upmanship was the best part of the Into the Woods movie — and if he’s going to turn bad, Magnussen was properly terrifying as the unhinged, megalomaniacal brother in this summer’s Ingrid Goes West.

And Magnussen’s isn’t the only new character. Saturday Night Live’s Nasim Pedrad is playing Mara, an original character who’s Jasmine’s handmaid and buddy in the palace. Maybe this means we’ll get a couple of new songs in the movie too!

Aladdin stars Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, and Will Smith, and is directed by Guy Ritchie.
