Takashi Miike is the most prolific filmmaker working today — his near-constant output is rivaled only by actors like Nicolas Cage and Dwayne Johnson, who might actually be robots. Miike has reached a truly impressive landmark in his career, as he prepares to unleash his 100th film, Blade of the Immortal. And as you might expect from the iconic Japanese director behind Audition and Ichi the Killer, the first trailer for his latest effort is completely wild, insanely violent, and totally NSFW.

Based on the manga series of the same name by Hiroaki Samura, Blade of the Immortal is an epic story of revenge — it’s also the simple, sweet tale of a girl and her samurai. JK, this movie looks bloody as hell. But again, that’s not really surprising from Miike, a director who is still best known to most viewers for his more gruesome and provocative films. Here’s the official synopsis for his latest:

Samurai Manji has taken a lot of lives, both innocent and guilty, and now lives life in feudal Japan as a criminal. After being cursed with immortality until he kills enough evil men, Manji meets a young girl who enlists him to be her body-guard. Swearing loyalty, protection and vengeance against the group of sword fighters who slaughtered her family, the unlikely duo set on a remarkable quest to make right against those who did them wrong.

Warner Bros. released Blade of the Immortal on April 29 in Japan, where it underperformed at the box office — according to the film’s writer, Tetsuya Oishi, this might have been due to the casting of Takuya Kimura, whose J-Pop group SMAP disbanded around the time Miike’s film hit theaters.

Magnet Releasing is handling the US release of Blade of the Immortal, which hits theaters on November 3.
