Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier, is back for Avengers: Infinity War, and in the first trailer it sure looks like his arm is back too. As we all know, Barnes (Sebastian Stan) was captured by Hydra and turned into a supersoldier assassin, outfitted with a big metal arm that could punch Captain America’s shield and now shatter into a million pieces. As we all also know, that arm was literally ripped off by Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit during that epic three-way battle in Captain America: Civil War. R.I.P. Bucky’s arm. At the end of the movie, we find out that he’s been sent to Wakanda for some R&R, and according to the Russo brothers it sounds like he got a few upgrades there too.

Anthony Russo, while speaking on set to Sina Weibo (h/t ScreenRant), gave a not-so-subtle answer to the question of Bucky’s new arm.

For everyone who’s seen Captain America: Civil War, they know Bucky was taken in by T’Challa in Wakanda. I think that, you know, we catch back up with him after he’s been there for a while, and if there’s an influence on his arm, it may perhaps have to do with that country that he’s been spending time in.

Wakanda, aside from being known as essentially the coolest place in the world, is also the one place on Earth one can mine vibranium, the second-toughest metal in the Marvel comics (the toughest is adamantium). That’s what Cap’s shield and Black Panther’s suit are made out of, and it sounds like that’s what Bucky’s new and improved limb has been made from too. Virtually indestructible, capable of absorbing kinetic energy, and probably outfitted with a few bells and whistles courtesy of T’Challa’s chief scientist Shuri. Now that’s what I call armed and dangerous.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters May 4.
