Richard Linklater’s follow-up to Everybody Wants Some is another sequel of sorts, but in an intriguing twist, it’s not connected to one of his own films. The Boyhood director has been developing a sequel to The Last Detail, the classic 1973 film starring Jack Nicholson and Randy Quaid. And Linklater has given us a few more reasons to be excited for his latest project: Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne.

Per THR, Carell, Cranston and Fishburne have joined the cast of Last Flag Flying, Linklater’s long-developing semi-sequel to Hal Ashby’s classic Oscar-nominated film. The Last Detail was based on the novel of the same name by Darryl Ponsican, who published the sequel, Last Flag Flying, in 2005. Not long after, Linklater expressed an interest in turning that book into a movie, hoping to recruit Nicholson and Quaid to reprise their roles.

But Nicholson has pretty much retired from acting and Quaid…well, his interests have migrated elsewhere, so to speak. Still, Linklater has lined up a solid trio for the new film: Carell, who appears in Woody Allen’s new film Cafe Society; Cranston, who recently played LBJ in HBO’s All the Way; and Fishburne, who co-stars in the upcoming Jennifer Lawrence-Chris Pratt sci-fi flick Passengers.

The Last Detail centered on a pair of Naval officers (Nicholson and Otis Young) tasked with transporting an offender (Quaid) to jail. Instead of bringing him right away, the two decide to give their young charge one last hurrah. Last Flag Flying takes place several years later in post-9/11 America, as the two Navy vets are contacted by their former criminal friend, who needs help bringing home the body of his son, who was killed while serving in Iraq.

Linklater’s latest will be his first project for Amazon Studios, which recently released Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon and Woody Allen’s Cafe Society.
