When ScreenCrush ranked the best horror movies of the last 25 years, we put The Strangers, Bryan Bertino’s home invasion thriller starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, on the list at #21; not too shabby at all for a small thriller that had been delayed for almost a year before it was finally released in 2008. Talk of a sequel had popped up occasionally; ScreenCrush’s last report on developments came in January 2015, when it was announced that Swiss filmmaker Marcel Langenegger would direct The Strangers 2Today Deadline gives us an update, with another director attached (Johannes Roberts), and a major star signing on to be terrorized for our pleasure.

That would be Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks, who will commence filming The Strangers 2 at the end of the month. Here’s the reported plot synopsis, which does indeed sound a lot like the plot synopsis of the other Strangers movie:

The Strangers 2 follows a family whose road trip takes a turn when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park and the power goes out. As they hunker down for the night in a borrowed trailer, three familiar masked psychopaths pay them a visit to test their every limit.

The big key for fans of The Strangers is the fact that Bertino co-wrote the script for this sequel, even though he won’t direct the film. The Strangers 2 will head to the market at the Cannes Film Festival, hoping to find backers willing to get into bed with masked killers. I’m confident they’ll find some takers.
