Yep, that Alita: Battle Angel movie is still happening. With James Cameron set to produce, Robert Rodriguez at the helm, and The Maze Runner's Rosa Salazar on board to play the titular cyborg from the manga series, all that’s left to do is to find the rest of the cast. And it looks like Christoph Waltz is in talks to play a pretty major role.

Alita: Battle Angel is the story of a female cyborg who is found by a cybernetics scientist Doctor Dyson Ido in a scrapyard. She has no memories, but for some reason is really good at the cyborg martial art (!!!) Panzer Kunst. She becomes a bounty hunter, and embarks on a journey to rediscover the past she has forgotten. The manga follows her story of self-discovery as well as the stories of the people she meets whose lives she changes along the way.

Cameron and Rodriguez may have already found their Dr. Dyson Ido in Christoph Waltz, who is currently considering a role in the film. Dyson Ido is a cybersurgeon who fixes Alita up and becomes her mentor. Waltz has normally stuck to the more villainous roles; his most recent credit was the nefarious Léon Rom in this summer’s The Legend of Tarzan, but he’s also no stranger to the friendly mentor figure, having played traveling dentist and bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz in Django Unchained.

Alita has no set release date, but Fox is possibly looking at a July 2018 slot.
