The CW’s FOX-rescued Black Lightning didn’t actually film an entire pilot in time for May’s Upfronts, and may not join the other four DC dramas on the network this fall. Instead, reports indicate that a potential Black Lightning pickup could see the new CW series held for 2018 at the earliest.

Initially, The CW declined to film a full Black Lightning pilot with the FOX script, opting for a shorter pilot presentation akin to Legends of Tomorrow’s first season. Now, a new assessment from The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Black Lightning could follow in Legends’ footsteps again, premiering at midseason in early 2018, if The CW goes through with its order.

That said, Legends’ second season moved from its midseason perch to join Arrow and The Flash (and Supergirl) in the fall, so it remains to be seen if The CW would be willing to run five superhero series at once. A midseason schedule could also imply a smaller episode order for Black Lightning.

Featuring Hart of Dixie alum Cress Wiliams in the title role, and produced by Greg Berlanti, The Game and Being Mary Jane creators Mara Brock Akil and husband Salim, Black Lightning’s synopsis reads:

Jefferson Pierce made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend — Black Lightning.

In addition to Christine Adams as Jefferson’s ex-wife, Lynn, Black Lightning will see Twin Peaks star Nafessa Williams take the role of Jefferson’s older daughter Anissa Pierce, described as a twenty-something woman who balances the demands of medical school with teaching part-time at her father’s school. China Anne McClain portrays Jennifer Pierce, described as “independent, outspoken scholar-athlete with a wild streak of her own,” while both later take on the comic identities of Thunder and Lightning.

It remains unclear if the series would take part in the same multi-verse as the other CW-DC dramas, but stay tuned for more on an official Black Lightning pickup.
