The Dark Knight Rises’ brought closure to Christopher Nolan’s vision of the Batman, which began with ‘Batman Begins’ and extended through ‘The Dark Knight.’ But it also created a gaping hole in the Batman landscape, as fans of the Caped Crusader wonder what they’re going to look forward to now that Nolan’s passion project has come to a close. We might have a suggestion.

DC’s animated branch has been toiling away on an adaptation of Frank Miller’s groundbreaking graphic novel ‘The Dark Knight Returns.’ The animated film will be broken into two parts, with the first installment reaching Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on Sept. 25. The first official trailer from the feature is now online and we've got it below.

As you’ll see, a lot of Miller’s story found its way into Nolan’s films, with a retired Bruce Wayne getting pulled back into the world of crime-fighting when a band of thugs dubbed The Mutants rampage Gotham. ‘Returns’ remains one of the most celebrated Batman graphic novels. This feature is sure to be snapped up by true Batman fans.

RoboCop himself, Peter Weller lends his voice to Batman/Bruce Wayne. Ariel Winter ('Modern Family') plays the new Robin. Wade Williams gets credit for Two-Face, while Michael McKean plays Dr. Bartholomew Wolper.

Here’s the trailer. What do you think? Will you sample this film when it comes out? And does it help fill the void left buy Nolan’s departure?
