Darren Aronofsky’s mother! is an intriguing little beast. After two trailers, all we know is that it stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Ed Harris, and it involves a couple whose relationship is more than tested after they invite another pair of folks into their home. Aronofsky himself also isn’t too forthcoming, but said that he was so inspired when he got the idea for the movie that he churned out a draft in just a couple of days.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Aronofsky talked about making the movie, and how excited he is about the mystery of it all.

I was always jealous of singer-songwriters who can pop out a song in a couple of days or a few hours. I had this idea, and I felt it rise up in my head. I took a long weekend and got into this fever dream and just pumped it out. [Laughs] We’ll see what the results are. It’s been an interesting way to approach it — trying to capture a single emotion and trying to tell a two-hour story out of that emotion.

He calls mother! “closer to Black Swan in spirit than anything I have done in a while,” which should be great news for fans of his Natalie Portman-starring psychological thriller. If anything, mother! looks like it’ll be even wilder, with shots of bloody lightbulbs, insects, and scary Michelle Pfeiffer in the trailers and two beautiful but disturbing posters. Aronofsky definitely wants audiences to go in knowing as little as possible about it all.

The best thing about this film will be the surprise of it. It’s an intense journey and it’s definitely the biggest roller coaster in the park. Only get on it if you really want to do the loop-the-loop.

If anything, the marketing for mother! and the ensuing buzz around it proves that studios don’t have to put everything in their trailers, and can instead rely on intrigue to get the word out. It also helps that mother! is chock-full of talent, and looks absolutely gorgeous.

A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. From filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream), mother! stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer in this riveting psychological thriller about love, devotion and sacrifice.

mother! hits theaters September 15.
