Apart from Jessica Jones, Daredevil will prove the Defender we’ve lost touch with the most, by the time Marvel’s four-way Netflix teamup debuts this summer. Season 2 left us on a semi-hopeful note of Matt making a surprise admission to Karen, but according to Charlie Cox, Matt will have taken things much further by the time The Defenders opens.

You’re warned of Daredevil and The Defenders spoilers from here on out, but it looks like Matt will have hung up his red suit semi-permanently when we catch up with the character again, lending an extra poignancy to the Hell’s Kitchen lawyer handing over his mask to Karen at the end of Season 2. To hear Charlie Cox tell it to Entertainment Weekly, Matt will be trying to keep off the streets as much as possible, before being dragged back in the fight:

Well, it’s been a few months since the end of season 2. I think it’s been quite a challenging few months for him. He took the death of Elektra very badly —I think he feels responsible for that. One of Matt’s big things is trying to protect the people he loves, which is why he keeps his identity hidden, and he’s failed. He’s left holding the dead body of a loved one, and so I think he’s tried to turn a corner.

It’s almost like quitting an addiction in the hope that it will get easier. He’s perhaps a little bit lost, and the best he can do for now is to not engage in his vigilante activities. When we meet him at the beginning of The Defenders, I’m not sure he’s completely found peace with that idea. I think he’s doing the best with what he can at the time. He finds himself between a rock and a hard place, which is the crux of his issue really from the beginning of season 1. “Should I or shouldn’t I? What is more beneficial to society?”

Elsewhere of Marvel’s Netflix Defenders, we know the eight-part event will feature among the returning cast Elodie Yung, Jessica Henwick, Scott Glenn, Rosario Dawson, Rachael Taylor, Simone Missick, Deborah Ann Woll, Carrie-Anne Moss, Elden Henson and Eka Darville. The team-up series will be helmed by Daredevil showrunners Marco Ramirez, and helmed in part by Jessica Jones director S.J. Clarkson.

We’ll have more looks at The Defenders soon, so stay tuned for word of the summer premiere!
