Today in news that is both obvious and delightful, director James Gunn confirmed that Vin Diesel (and Groot) will return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Sure, it was a foregone conclusion, but it’s good to know that our favorite lovable tree alien will be back for the sequel — although Gunn did not confirm if Groot will be bringing his sweet dance moves back.

Just as Guardians of the Galaxy is sort of the wacky renegade of the MCU, so is Gunn, who often takes to Facebook to answer fan questions in contrast to the typical secrecy of Marvel Studios. During his latest Q&A, the director was asked if Diesel is returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — actually, the curious fan made a typo and asked if Diesel is returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which caused a bit of a stir when Gunn responded with “Yes” and fans immediately took this as confirmation of a third film.

But the bottom line is that yes, Diesel and Groot are coming back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, presumably along with Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Karen Gillan. Recently Benicio Del Toro revealed that he wasn’t sure if he’d be back for the sequel, though he felt pretty optimistic that we’ll see The Collector in the MCU again soon.

When we last saw Groot he had seemingly given his life to protect his pals, but Rocket saved a tiny twig and began regrowing Groot — in the post-credits scene, baby Groot is seen dancing in his little pot. It’s unclear how quickly Groot can grow, so who knows if he’ll be back to full-size Groot when we see him again.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
