During today’s animated presentation at D23, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar head John Lasseter announced Gigantic, a new, “definitive” take on the Jack and the Beanstalk story — because apparently Disney feels the need to have the final say on this whole Beanstalk business.

Back in April, it was reported that Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan was working on a revisionist take on Jack and the Beanstalk for Disney, simply titled Beanstalk. It’s unclear if Gilligan and Disney are still moving ahead with that project — but with Lasseter’s announcement today (via Mashable), it’s safe to assume that if Gilligan is still developing his Jack and the Beanstalk movie, it’s probably a separate, live-action project.

Gigantic is being directed by Nathan Greno, who previously helmed Tangled, a charming and wonderfully smart take on the classic Rapunzel fairy tale. In addition, Lasseter revealed that Oscar-winning (and EGOT-holding) Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez are writing original songs for Gigantic. The duo appeared on stage at D23 to sing one of the songs from the film — the song is sung by Ema, a giant girl who finds Jack and calls him “My Little Man.”

Here’s the first piece of art from the film:

Lasseter didn’t reveal much else about the upcoming animated project, but given the “definitive” description, it’s safe to say that Disney’s laying down the gauntlet with this whole Jack and the Beanstalk thing. The film hits theaters sometime in 2018.
