There are certainly some obvious similarities between 'Django Unchained' and 'Inglourious Basterds' but are these two Quentin Tarantino revenge films actually part of a trilogy? Before you think this is just some fanboy theory, it is Tarantino himself who makes the claim and even talks about the third film.

Both 'Django Unchained' and 'Inglourious Basterds' are revenge films, centered around two of our biggest historical atrocities; slavery and the Holocaust, respectively. Tarantino spoke about the film's similarities and even revealed they may be part of a quasi-trilogy:

I don’t know, 'Inglourious Basterds' and 'Django Unchained' bespeak a trilogy. As different as they are, there is a companion piece quality. There might very well be a third one. I just don’t know what it is yet.

Revenge films are nothing new for Tarantino but it's interesting to hear him discuss the possibility of a third historical revenge film that would serve as a trilogy companion piece with 'Django' and 'Basterds.' But by admitting he doesn't know what that is yet, we'd have to think whatever this film is, it could be a ways off.

What potential event could Tarantino frame a third movie in this "trilogy" around? Native American genocide? A cowboys and Indians type movie?

'Django Unchained' hits theaters on December 25th.
