The identity of Mads Mikkelsen’s villain in Doctor Strange has been a big secret for months, but recent photos from a toy set (of all things) seemingly confirmed the name of Marvel’s new big bad. Things just became official, as a preview for the company’s Doctor Strange prequel comic reveals that Mikkelsen is playing Kaecilius — wait, who the heck is Kaecilius?! No, really. Who is this guy?

That name was rumored late last year, but now it’s 100 percent confirmed thanks to Marvel’s preview of their new Doctor Strange prequel comic. In the book, written by Will Corona Pilgrim (now that’s a name), the identity of the mystery villain is revealed to be Kaecilius, a former Master of the Mystic Arts and student of The Ancient One. When another protege steals a powerful staff, Kaecilius and a few other Masters team up to retrieve it. Here he is on the left (via ComicBook.com):

That’s all well and good, but again: Who the hell is Kaecilius? I even asked our resident comic book expert, Matt Singer, and that name didn’t ring a bell. In fact, most comic book fans I’ve spoken to had no idea who the character was. In the comics, he was a disciple of Baron Mordo (played in the film by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a fellow student of The Ancient One.

Kaecilius was a pretty minor character (he appears in just 11 issues of the comic) and basically a courier for Baron Mordo, delivering messages and running his errands. Mordo eventually becomes power-hungry and, with the help of Kaecilius, tries to kidnap The Ancient One to steal his energy. Given what we’ve seen in the trailer, it’s possible that this story has been changed up a bit to make Kaecilius the primary antagonist, though it’s also been suggested that Baron Mordo won’t remain on the right side of things for the entire film.

But it’d be a shame if Mordo’s eventual villainy is intended to be a big plot twist — and that could be why Kaecilius’ identity has been kept secret for so long. In any case, now you know who Mads Mikkelsen is officially playing in Doctor Strange, and we should learn even more this month when Marvel brings their latest adventure to San Diego Comic-Con.

Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4.
