‘Doctor Strange’ Wants ‘Prometheus’ writer Jon Spaihts for Scripting Duties

As Marvel has set ‘Deliver Us From Evil‘ helmer Scott Derrickson as the director of ‘Doctor Strange,’ they’re now figuring out who will write the script that will be used when shooting commences. The leading candidate is ‘Prometheus‘ screenwriter Jon Spaihts.

This news comes from Deadline, and though ‘Prometheus’ has settled into a its reputation as a mostly disappointing prequel (that every once in a while bobs up its head to suggest a sequel is coming), most people who’ve read Spaihts draft think it was better than the finished film, while his script for ‘Passengers‘ is revered, though that film has struggled to make it to the big screen. Basically, he’s the best guy writing science fiction for the big screen right now (if Alfonso Cuaron doesn’t count). There was an original draft of ‘Strange’ written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (who also wrote the ‘Conan the Barbarian’ reboot) for Marvel, but it’s unknown if Spaihts is doing a page one rewrite or if he’s being brought in to flesh out their work (it sounds more like the former).

Even if it is a huge revision, it’s likely that Marvel already knows how the film fits into their bigger picture, as the Doctor’s arrival was teased earlier this year in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier.’ But not having a finished script may explain why the central role hasn’t been cast yet, though names like Jared Leto, Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch have been rumored.
