The BBC's last precursor to Saturday's 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary special surprisingly brought back series star Paul McGann for "The Night of the Doctor," but will the second short fill in the last pieces of the puzzle? Count down to "The Day of the Doctor" with the latest 'Doctor Who' minisode "The Last Day," featuring some old enemies, and a new glimpse of the Time War!

Available for free download on iTunes (though we're told UK subscribers were mistakenly asked to pay), "The Last Day" places us right in the middle of the infamous Time War, taking the point of view of a soldier from Gallifrey stationed in Arcadia, right before the Daleks turned the tide of the war. You won't find Matt Smith or even David Tennant returning, though the short may provide a key bit of context for this Saturday's epic anniversary event.

Elsewhere here’s how the BBC describes the upcoming special:

The Doctors embark on their greatest adventure in this 50th anniversary special. In 2013, something terrible is awakening in London’s National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion. All of reality is at stake as the Doctor’s own dangerous past comes back to haunt him.

November 23 will also see the airing of a special by Professor Brian Cox on BBC Two about the science behind the show, coupled with ‘Sherlock‘ star Mark Gatiss’ ‘Doctor Who’ origins movie, ‘An Adventure in Space and Time.’ “The Day of the Doctor” itself will also be simulcast globally, and released in select US theaters for a 3D broadcast.

Well, are you ready for "The Last Day"? Count down to the 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary with the latest minisode above, and give us your predictions in the comments!
