Rey’s heritage remains one of the biggest mysteries of the new Star Wars trilogy. Director Rian Johnson has previously confirmed that the identity of Rey’s parents will be revealed when The Last Jedi hits theaters this December, but the cast and crew are keeping particularly tight-lipped because, as Johnson has said, there’s another element of secrecy tied into that plot point. In a new interview, co-star Adam Driver may have given us another piece of the puzzle.

Speaking with GQ, Driver discussed how the evolution of his character, the villainous Kylo Ren, relates to that of Daisy Ridley’s Rey — while also (potentially) revealing something interesting about the latter:

I remember the initial conversations about having things ‘skinned’, peeling away layers to evolve into other people, and the person Kylo’s pretending to be on the outside is not who he is. He’s a vulnerable kid who doesn’t know where to put his energy, but when he puts his mask on, suddenly, he’s playing a role. JJ had that idea initially and I think Rian took it to the next level…You have, also, the hidden identity of this princess who’s hiding who she really is so she can survive and Kylo Ren and her hiding behind these artifices.

It’s possible that Driver misspoke, but if Rey is truly royalty, that would narrow things down a bit with regards to the identity of her parents. Is she really the daughter of General Leia Organa, as some have speculated? That would make sense as to why her fate is so intertwined with Kylo Ren’s own. And then there’s that intriguing scene in the latest trailer, where Kylo and Rey appear to be having some sort of moment, and he looks as if he’s reaching his hand out to her…

Maybe Kylo Ren is about to experience an awakening and change sides; it certainly seems as though Driver is indicating that the Star Wars baddie isn’t exactly who we think he is.

We’ll find out (relatively) soon enough, when The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15.
