It was a good idea replacing Brendan Fraser for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the sequel to 2008's 'Journey to the Center of the Earth'. While Fraser did prove he could sell the first ('Journey 1' pulled in $242 million worldwide on a $60 million budget) and pleased most critics (62% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), 'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' has managed to pull in $242 million worldwide and is still selling out internationally. Why? People love The Rock. This is the only actor who can star in a movie called 'Tooth Fairy' and make it a box office success. The Rock will make you see his movie.

The Wrap reports that director Brad Peyton and screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn have already signed on for the third film, now making it a franchise, and Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzman and Josh Hutcherson are rumored to return as well. Soon we will see Hutcherson in Lionsgate's much anticipated release of 'The Hunger Games,' and the Movie Gods have assured us that this film will be a success and blockbuster franchise. So timing is a big factor in Hutcherson's future involvement.

The Rock is a busy man, currently in negotiations to star in eight blockbuster movies including 'Fast and the Furious 6 and 7', but money talks and I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to continue starring in a franchise that's furthering his international megastar career. You can see The Rock next in Paramount's 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation', opening June 29th.
