Dylan O’Brien has caught franchise fever. With his work on the last installment of The Maze Runner series wrapping up, he’s just started production on American Assassin, based on Vince Flynn’s bestselling 15-book series. O’Brien will play Mitch Rapp, a counterterrorism operative who has to stop a maniac from igniting another world war.

Below, check out our first glance at O'Brien as Rapp, looking like he’s about to interrogate some unfortunate suspect.

Here is the synopsis of American Assassin, according to Deadline:

O’Brien stars as Rapp, a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair then is enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on military and civilian targets. Together they discover a pattern in the violence that leads them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a world war in the Middle East.

The film will be directed by Michael Cuesta, and shooting is expected to start in Europe soon. Cuesta inherited the project from Antoine Fuqua (The Magnificent Seven) and Ed Zwick (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back) both of whom wanted to direct their own American Assassin films at one point. Cuesta’s directing work on Homeland indicates that he’s more than up to the task of taking on a counterterrorism thriller. American Assassin doesn’t currently have a release date.
