Franck Khalfoun's 'Maniac' remake is slated to play the Cannes midnight circuit this month, so it's about time we get our first official look at Elijah Wood in the titular role.

The images come courtesy of The Playlist and feature Wood and co-star Nora Arnezeder ('Safe House') and a bloody mannequin. The official synopsis:

Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt. Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank's obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.

Khalfoun's previous director credits include 'P2' and 'Wrong Turn at Tahoe,' which doesn't make him sound like the best fit to direct this remake, but the screenplay was written by Alexandre Aja, the French writer/director import now best known for his horror remakes in America, including 'The Hills Have Eyes' and 'Piranha 3D.'

The images lack the gritty aesthetic of the original film, directed by William Lustig and starring Joe Spinell in the title role. Still, with Elijah Wood on board, we're certain Khalfoun's vision must be something special to attract the sensible actor. And that mannequin shot is definitely kind of creepy.

'Maniac' is currently slated for release in the US next year. Until then, enjoy these new images.
