Well, this is going to make for an awkward afternoon at the Streep household. Where earlier today we reported that one-time 'Smash' guest and Meryl Streep's daughter Grace Gummer had landed a plum role in the second season of HBO's buzzy Aaron Sorkin drama 'The Newsroom,' it seems her sister Mamie Gummer doesn't have as much reason to celebrate. The CW has reportedly passed on producing additional episodes of freshman medical drama 'Emily Owens, M.D.,' but is there hope yet for the series?

UPDATE 11/14 - We want to apologize to The CW and 'Emily Owens' fans for the confusion. Guns were accidentally jumped, and this was mistakenly published before any official confirmations. As of now, 'Emily Owens M.D.' is NOT, repeat NOT cancelled, and continues with the additional scripts ordered by The CW. Cancellation rumors were sparked by production blogger Susan Gittins, who tweeted, "Sad news today. Vancouver-shot #EmilyOwensMD cancelled. A charming show that got lost in Fall launch." In response, The CW Senior Vice President Paul Hewitt stated, "It has not been shut down.
If anyone had bothered to call me, I would have told them that." Cheers, fans!

While not exactly shocking, The CW has made its first major cancellation of the season, pulling the plug on the Mamie Gummer-fronted freshman medical drama 'Emily Owens, M.D.' The series debuted to relatively weak numbers when pitted against the 2012 Presidential debates, never quite garnering enough interest in subsequent episodes.

Previously, The CW had granted additional script orders for the series and cast 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' alum D.B. Woodside for a multi-episode arc as Dr. Gina Bandari (Necar Zadegan)’s husband Evan. It remains to be seen how many episodes will be produced before production shuts down.

'Emily Owens M.D.' represents the first major CW cancellation of the season, while previously uncertain drama 'Beauty and the Beast' managed to earn a full season pickup. Will you miss 'Emily Owens M.D.'? Tell us if you watched the show in the comments! Did another deserve to be axed in its place?
