We love Spider-Man. If pressed, we might say that he’s our favorite superhero. We also love superhero movies, as evidenced by this very site and our coverage of such movies. Yet…we can’t help but agree a little bit with two-time Oscar-winner Emma Thompson who admitted that if she has to sit through another Spider-Man movie, she’s going to hang herself.

Thompson was speaking to Vulture about her upcoming film A Walk in the Woods and, as seems to be a requirement for celebrity interviews these days, she was asked about the superhero boom. She did not mince words.

If I see yet another Spider-Man, I’m going to have to actually hang myself. I can’t do it anymore! They’re all marvelous, but how many times can you make this franchise, for crying out loud?

Emma Thompson asking the tough questions! (For the record, they can make it at least three times, likely many more by the time we’re all dead and gone.)

Thompson says she doesn’t mean to hate on the genre (she loved the original Superman and says she’s very excited for Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman movie), but said, “After a while, you do get a tiny bit cynical about it.”

Even the most ardent supporter of Marvel, superhero movies and Spidey himself would have to admit that the frequency and diminished quality of the Spider-Man movies has been a little bit of a downer. The only thing giving us any kind of optimism for another Spider-Man movie is that Marvel has some semblance of creative control. If we had to sit through another Amazing Spider-Man sequel, we might ask Ms. Thompson to pass her noose.

Someone keep an eye out on Emma Thompson on July 28, 2017 when the Jon Watts’ directed Spider-Man reboot hits theaters.
