Equals left a mixed impression on festival crowds, but it left a sizable impression nonetheless. Soon we’ll be able to judge for ourselves, thanks to the good folks at A24, who have debuted a new official trailer for the sleek dystopian sci-fi romance starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult as a pair of doomed lovers living in a society that forbids all human emotion and physical contact.

That’s a familiar plot, for sure, and Equals does seem derivative of films like Equilibrium, The Giver, THX 1138, Logan’s Run and any number of dystopian sci-fi stories that feature a high-stakes romance — but it’s not about the stuff you borrow from other narratives; it’s what you ultimately do with it. And although Equals has received some negative reviews, it’s also resonated with many critics, thanks in part to some gorgeous cinematography / design and excellent performances from Stewart and Hoult.

The pair star as Nia and Silas, citizens in a dystopian future society in which any and all human emotion and intimate physical contact is illegal. But when the two are exposed to a disease that triggers feeling, they find themselves hopelessly drawn to one another — and possibly their own downfall.

Equals boasts a seriously great cast and crew: Directed by Drake Doremus, who previously helmed romantic indie dramas Like Crazy and Breathe In; scripted by Nathan Parker, who wrote Duncan Jones’ acclaimed directorial debut Moon; and scored by Dustin O’Halloran (best known for Marie Antoinette and Transparent) and Sascha Ring (Laurence Anyways).

The film also stars Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver, Diary of a Teenage Girl breakout Bel Powley, Kate Lyn Sheil and Toby Huss, and hits select theaters on July 15.
