Salma Hayek has appeared in some excellent action films over the years, but more often than not she’s been cast as the love interest/sidekick/damsel-in-distress. The upcoming indie thriller ‘Everly’ gives Hayek the opportunity to take center stage (and an enormous arsenal of weaponry) in order to save herself, while shooting it out with a whole bunch of baddies. Here’s the official synopsis:

The Black List script by Yale Hannon is an intense action thriller centered on a down-on-her-luck woman (Hayek) who is forced to fend off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss, while trying to save her estranged mother and daughter. The film is set entirely in one apartment, and is based on a concept created by [director Joe] Lynch.

‘Everly’ played at Fantastic Fest earlier this year, where it got largely positive reviews for Hayek’s performance and Joe Lynch’s direction. Radius-TWC will release the movie in the U.S. in 2015.
