Fantastic Fest 2017 Final Wave Includes ‘Downsizing,’ ‘Professor Marston and the Wonder Women’ and More
Fantastic Fest 2017 is looking, how do you say…lit. The Alamo Drafthouse has unleashed the final wave of titles for this year’s lineup, which includes Alexander Payne’s latest, Wonder Woman’s wild origin story, the sequel to World of Tomorrow, and much, much more. As always, the Alamo’s annual genre film festival remains the only place where you can attend a performance by Gilbert Gottfried, watch a 4K restoration of a blood-soaked Takashi Miike cult classic, and see forever bonkers favorite Nicolas Cage as a murderous father.
For those concerned that the first wave of Fantastic Fest 2017 films might have been a little front-loaded, the second and final wave is just as strong. This year’s final wave highlights include Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, starring Matt Damon; Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, with filmmaker Angela Robinson in attendance; World of Tomorrow Two: The Burden of Other People’s Thoughts, Don Hertzfeldt’s sequel to his acclaimed animated short; Mom and Dad, starring Nic Cage and Selma Blair as psycho parents; Thelma, the latest film from Oslo August 31 director Joachim Trier; and Gilbert, a new documentary about Gilbert Gottfried, who will also be treating attendees to a special performance.
As previously announced, if you can’t make it down to Austin later this month, the Alamo Drafthouse is bringing a little slice of Fantastic Fest to their Brooklyn, Denver and San Francisco locations. You won’t get the full Fantastic experience (no face-melting Satanic marching bands), but you will be able to see the AGFA secret screening — described as “a brand new 2K transfer of one of the most sought-after lost films in the history of exploitation cinema.” If AGFA’s previous contributions to Fantastic Fest are any indication, you definitely don’t want to miss this one.
