The Flash has a habit of keeping its speedster big bads in play, between Reverse Flash recurring throughout the franchise, or Teddy Sears’ Zoom undergoing a familiar transformation in the Season 2 finale. Don’t expect the disfigured Hunter Zolomon to return as the so-called “Black Flash,” however, as Sears doubts his availability.

As a refresher for those up to speed through The Flash Season 2, Sears’ faux-Jay Garrick turned Hunter Zolomon/Zoom was finally punished for his abuse of time-travel in Season 2 finale “The Race of His Life,” last seen horribly mutated and dragged off by the Time Wraiths, Ghost-style. Zoom’s transformation intentionally called to mind the design of DC’s speedster-grim reaper “Black Flash,” though Sears tells TVGuide that 24: Legacy likely stands in the way of any Season 3 return:

Andrew Kreisberg, the head writer and EP, has talked about their interest in having a Black Flash return at some point in the series … It would be a lot of fun to drop back into that world. We’ll just have to see if the guys on the other end feel the same way. It sounds like they do, but it’s funny - now I belong to Fox, so there’s lots of people that would have to give a thumbs up. But I really hope so.

As the report notes, a speedster harbinger of death could certainly prove useful in Barry’s battle against Speed Force “god” Savitar, who was still seen to pose a threat five months from now despite Barry and the real Jay Garrick’s winter finale efforts. In any case, a Black Flash appearance might not necessarily require Sears regardless, given the CGI involved in realizing the decayed character. Sorry to cost you a paycheck, Teddy.

Not to mention, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said back in August:

Obviously we [spared the character] on purpose. We love working with Teddy. He’s such an amazing actor and amazing person, and was so much a part of the success of this show last season. There aren’t any immediate plans for that, but you can’t keep a good Black Flash down, so I’m sure we’ll be seeing him in the future.

In any case, The Flash has plenty to come back to in 2017, between musicals, Gypsies, and maybe even new a costume, so stay tuned for the latest on Season 3's January return.
