There were only so many ways The Flash could spin Reverse-Flash’s identity, and few choices for the man under Zoom’s mask, so will Savitar prove any different? That’s the buzz from Flash cast and crew, who explain the delayed reveal and promise “You won’t see it coming.”

You’re warned of potential Flash Season 3 spoilers from here on out, but so far, only select clues have been dropped toward the identity of “speed god” Savitar. The major focus has been stopping the future murder of Iris, though the demonic speedster has alluded to Barry imprisoning him in the Speed Force in the future, and often repeats the phrase “I am the future, Flash.”

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Todd Helbing teased why Savitar’s identity has been withheld longer than usual:

Normally we have shown the identity of the villains a lot earlier in the season. There’s a specific reason why we waited for this reveal until now. Nobody’s going to see this coming. Harrison Wells [Tom Cavanagh] in season one and Jay [Teddy Sears] in season two were satisfying reveals, but this one takes the cake.

Star Grant Gustin also alluded to the reveal as non-traditional for the series:

It is a very different and jarring kind of reveal. I can’t really tease much other than it’s going to be the hardest big bad to take down or even come up with a way to take down. It creates problems for us when we find out his true identity.

Candice Patton too promised “You won’t see it coming,” in the process wondering how the twist might even work. So, what should we expect? Is there more to that “I am the future, Flash” quote than meets the eye? What about Savitar’s resemblance to the literal Future Flash, or Barry becoming his own worst enemy in creating the Flashpoint timeline?

We’ll likely gain further insight by next Tuesday’s post-musical “Abra Kadabra,” so check out the trailer below.
