DC fans knew that FOX’s Gotham was unlikely to meet up with the CW heroes of Arrow or The Flash, though the latter’s visit to CBS’ Supergirl at least raised hope that FOX’s upcoming Black Lightning could join the next big crossover. Not so, it seems as DC TV boss Greg Berlanti seems to think FOX’s newest superhero will stand on his own for now.

The series has only a pilot production commitment guaranteed at FOX, produced by Berlanti himself with The Game and Being Mary Jane creator Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil. Still, when asked at the TCA press tour (via CBR) if Black Lightning could ever join the CW heroes via one of those handy-dandy parallel universe breaches, Berlanti offered:

I don’t think so. If we’re lucky enough that that exists, that that show exists, I don’t think those worlds will cross over.

So reads the series synopsis:

Jefferson Pierce made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend — Black Lightning.

Black Lightning is notable as one of DC Comics’ first major African-American superheroes, and would follow as one of the first to headline a live-action series. The comic character also has two daughters, including Anissa Pierce/Thunder and Jennifer Pierce/Lightning, both of whom have belonged to different superhero groups.

There’s no reason not to think a successful launch of Black Lightning could open the door to more fantastical fare (remember when Arrow was about a guy doing parkour?), but is a FOX/CW partnership a door best-left closed? What other super-dramas could we potentially combine?
