This was clearly something you couldn't live the rest of your life without knowing happened. Many a fan have spent many an hour in many a basement engaged in glorious battle, debating the respective merits of George R.R. Martin's iconic fantasy series 'Game of Thrones,' as well as J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy classic 'The Lord of the Rings.' Naturally, those debates would turn to nerd battles of who might win in a fight, so let's hear what Martin himself has to say!

Aragorn vs. Jamie Lannister? Tyrion vs. Frodo? Sean Bean vs. Sean Bean? Now you've gone crazy. Such madness was the talk of a recent MTV interview with 'Game of Thrones' creator George R.R. Martin, who was tasked with deciding the outcome between battles of characters from both franchises. Martin's answers were surprisingly fair, but when asked for a rebuttal, 'Lord of the Rings' author J.R.R. Tolkien remained silent as the grave.

So who do you think would win in such a fantasy smackdown? Would the dragons of the respective universe be able to out-maneuver one another? Would the Dwarven Gimli be able to overcome The Mountain? Would Sean Bean, providing the cause of his own death scene, tear a hole in the very fabric of the universe?

Check out George R.R. Martin's answers as we wait for 'Game of Thrones' season 3's spring debut, and give us your picks for 'Game of Thrones' vs. 'Lord of the Rings' battles in the comments!
