‘Game of Thrones’ Season 5 Confirms Dorne Setting, New (and Old?) Characters Revealed

Game of Thrones Season 5 Spoilers Dorne Characters
HBO

We’re still reeling from the ‘Game of Thrones‘ season 4 finale “The Children,” but already our cup runneth over with desire for season 5′s arrival in 2015. Now, the showrunners of HBO’s mammoth fantasy-drama have gone on record to confirm a few major new details of season 5, including shooting locations and new characters to populate it.

Many previously speculated that the additional ‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 shooting location of Spain would double for the kingdom of Dorne, oft-mentioned within the series but never seen, and it seems the showrunners are no longer keeping confirmation under wraps. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, David Benioff and Dan Weiss responded to questions of Dorne by saying, “There will be Dorne, and we’re excited about it. Who wouldn’t want to hang out in Dorne? They have admirable values and priorities.”

In addition to some of the recently leaked casting breakdowns suggesting Dorne, a few other call sheets have hit the web, including one that suggests we might see some flashbacks to Cersei’s youth. Via WinterIsComing:

Varamyr: Dubbed Varamyr Sixskins in the book series, the wildling skinchanger initially appears in A Storm of Swords when he takes possession of the late Orell’s eagle, and takes on his scout role as well with Mance Rayder’s army. The book describes Varamyr as a small man, bald and grey-faced with round shoulders. The show is supposedly looking to cast an actor in the 35-45-year-old age range. It’s unclear what position Varamyr will take on in the fifth season as his introduction point in the books has already passed in the show.

Imogen: A 12-year-old blonde girl. It’s speculated that this may actually be the casting call for young Cersei. Given that there is no Imogen in the books, and we’ve heard that Game of Thrones is auditioning girls for the role of young Cersei, this seems likely.

Brunette girl: 12 years old. There’s no additional information about this part. For book-related possibilities, our best guess with regards to the role is probably Melara, a girl involved in young Cersei’s story with the fortuneteller Maggy the Frog.

Elsewhere, Benioff offered that we’d meet somewhat less new characters in season 5 than in prior years, as the next cycle will prove to be something of a midpoint for the series’ run, and sees the world of Westeros contracting more than expanding. As expected, the story will draw heavily from George R.R. Martin‘s fourth and fifth novels, ‘A Feast for Crows’ and ‘A Dance with Dragons,’ as the former excludes many of the established characters we’ve come to know. “We’re not going in strict order because we can’t. We can’t adapt ‘Feast’ and leave out half our characters.”

We’ll likely learn more from Comic-Con 2014, but in the meantime, what say you? Are you excited to see what Dorne has to offer in ‘Game of Thrones’ season 5? With all of the characters headed to new lands, who are you most excited to catch up with in 2015?

Oh, and for anyone who wondered what Gendry has been up to since season 3 …
