‘Game of Thrones’ Officially Renewed for Seasons 7 and 8?

Just a few short hours ago, HBO gave Game of Thrones fans reason to celebrate by confirming Season 6’s April premiere, but the party may not be over just yet. Sources say that HBO will soon renew Game of Thrones for both Seasons 7 and 8, potentially to close out the series.

The Hollywood Reporter relays that HBO boss Mike Lombardo told reporters at the ongoing TCA press tour of the network nearing two-season renewal deal, the first in the show’s history (and potentially the last). Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had long-indicated their intent on a seven-season run (with the cast currently contracted as such), though HBO has often pushed for an eighth year, if not beyond.

Official announcements are expected in the near future, especially as HBO set the Season 6 premiere for April 24.

Elsewhere of Game of Thrones Season 6, screen legend Max von Sydow has been cast as the mysterious Three-Eyed Raven to a returning Bran, while Deadwood alum Ian McShane will also appear in a limited, mysterious role, joining Richard E. Grant and The Babadook star Essie Davis as theatre troup players, four notable actors as the Tarly family, Melanie Liburd as a new Red Priestess, and Borgen star Pilou Asbæk as fan-favorite Euron Greyjoy. Apart from a list of directors, Of Monsters and Men will put in a cameo, and story logistics seemingly confirm scenes set at The Wall next year, presumably to explain this giant spoiler.

We won’t have The Winds of Winter for any heads-up on the Game of Thrones Season 6 premiere, but check out the teasers below, and stay tuned for April 24!
