Let’s face it, “From the author of Game of Thrones” is going to get feet through the door, regardless of whether George R.R. Martin is actually involved. That’s what Syfy’s counting on for its adaptation of Martin’s Nightflyers, a decidedly more space-faring odyssey that now has its very own pilot order.

Per Syfy’s official announcement, the new series based on Martin’s 1980 novella (which spawned its own 1987 film) will move forward with a pilot adaptation at Syfy, written by Jeff Buhler and executive-produced by Gene Klein, David Bartis, Doug Linman, Alison Rosenweig, Michael Gaeta, Lloyd Ivan Miller, and Alice P. Neuhauser, with ‘87 film writer Robert Jaffe attached to produce. And before you get the urge to yell at Martin for adding further delay to The Winds of Winter, know that the Game of Thrones author is not directly involved.

Here’s the spooky synopsis:

Nightflyers tells the story of eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who, hoping to make contact with alien life, embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer, a ship with a small, tight-knit crew and a reclusive captain. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place, they start to question each other — and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.

Martin was also previously said to have an adaptation of Wild Cards in development, but does the new (old) project from the mind of George R.R. Martin sound worth a look?
