The unofficial starting gun of the Oscar race went off last night in Manhattan, with the announcement of the annual Gotham Awards. The big winners were Get Out, Jordan Peele’s horror comedy about a young black man’s trip home to meet his girlfriend’s white parents, and Call Me By Your Name, a period romance about a teenager who falls for one of his father’s research assistants over a long, swoony Italian summer. Get Out took home the Gothams for Best Screenplay, the Audience Award, and Breakthrough Director for Peele, whose chances at Oscar nominations in a couple months are looking better and better. Call Me By Your Name earned the Breakthrough Actor award for Timothée Chalamet, who plays the younger half of the film’s key relationship (Armie Hammer plays the other) and the big prize of the night, Best Feature.

The Gothams’ best actors were both from features distributed by A24. James Franco’s uncanny portrayal of historically bad filmmaker Tommy Wiseau earned him Best Actor for The Disaster Artist, while Saoirse Ronan took home Best Actress for her role as the title character in Greta Gerwig’s lovely coming-of-age film Lady Bird. They’re both excellent performances; both deserve to be in the thick of the Oscar conversation.
