Whatever your feelings on FOX’s Gotham, few would argue that Robin Taylor’s Penguin proved an early highlight of the show, accented by screen legend Carol Kane as his eccentric mother. Now, the Penguin family lineage grows even odder, as Pee-wee Herman himself, Paul Reubens signs on to play Penguin’s father (again) in Gotham Season 2.

Gotham has offered admittedly little of the character thus far, though the Batman prequel drama’s New York Comic-Con 2015 panel saw Robin Taylor himself gleefully confirming the news, without specification as to when we’d see Penguin’s pop. Notably, Reubens also played the role of Oswald Cobblepot’s father in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, the style of which bears a heavy influence on Gotham.

Said Taylor in the announcement:

So, we’re all familiar with Oswald’s mother, the fabulous, fabulous Carol Kane. We don’t know a lot about his father … we just found out that I do have a father. And he will be showing up very soon, and he will be played by none other than Paul Reubens, AKA Pee-wee Herman! He’s playing my dad! What … the … hell!

Granted, we don’t yet know what circumstances will bring Papa Penguin to Gotham, it’s certainly an interesting bit of meta casting. The series has a number of other notable Season 2 roles to fill, but what can we expect from Paul Reubens returning to the role? Is Max Schreck, or a giant duck in our future? Check out the sizzle reel below, before tomorrow’s episode.
