Surprising virtually no one, Sony and Polyphony Digital revealed Gran Turismo 6 would arrive on the PlayStation 3 before the end of 2013.

While no concrete release date was nailed down, Sony and Polyphony were more than enthusiastic about Gran Turismo 6 during the franchise's 15th anniversary celebration at Silverstone Circuit in the UK. “It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo,” said the game's creator Kazunori Yamauchi. “Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We’re pleased to deliver GT 6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments."

Gran Turismo 6 will feature seven new locations in addition to those found in GT5, bringing the total courses to 33 (with 71 different layouts possible). All of the cars from the previous entry will return as well, and coupled with the new makes and models, GT6 will feature some 1200 different cars. Polyphony promised even more customizability in this sequel as well, which includes a host of improvements to the course creator.

“I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will only be the beginning for GT6," Yamauchi added. "The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!”

Sony will have more on Gran Turismo 6 at E3, but you can check out some of the first screens from the upcoming racer below. What do you think of a new Gran Turismo launching on the PlayStation 3 instead of the PlayStation 4?
