F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel 'The Great Gatsby' has been translated onto film and television a number of times. But none of them have the 3D glitz and glamour promised in Baz Luhrmann's upcoming take on the book.

The film - which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher - centers on Nick Carraway (Maguire), a man who's lured into the lavish world of Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio). But once he gets a peek into the wealthy man's life he discovers the madness that encompasses Gatsby's life.

Go ahead and take a look at the pictures below, courtesy of Empire Online. 'The Great Gatsby' will be released in theaters on Christmas Day in 3D. Yeah, we're not entirely sure how a story like this will work in 3D either, but at least we'll be captivated by the elaborate costume and set design. Luhrmann's films have never disappointed on that front before. But at the same time this is the same man who delivered to us 'Australia,' a movie that didn't wow anybody when released in theaters a few years back. Here's hoping that this captivates audiences like what he managed to do with 'Romeo + Juliet.'
